UH Research Finds Potential Key to Learning a New Language

  Ability to Learn Foreign Speech Revealed in Brain ActivityA new study by University of Houston (UH) researchers may lead to dramatic changes in the way language is taught and learned – especially a second language. These findings are important because statistics show 60 percent of the children in the Houston Independent School District are non-native English speakers, a category on the rise across the United States.Arturo Hernandez, director of the developmental graduate program in psychology at UH, used neuroimaging methods, as well as behavior techniques, to investigate language acquisition in the bilingual brain, mapping how the bilingual brain processes language acquisition and observing how it changes over time.“There is a lot of interest in the brain and interest in bilingualism, but few people put those two together,” Hernandez said. “People used to think of the mind as separate from the brain. Now, they understand that what happens in the mind is the product of what the brain does.”Hernandez, who also serves as director of the Laboratory for the Neural Bases of Bilingualism at UH and is the author of a new book, “The Bilingual Brain,” said recent research explores whether bilinguals have more plasticity and adaptability because they have learned two sounds systems and can learn vocabulary words better than monolinguals. He wondered whether could they learn a third sound system better.To find out, a UH post-doctoral researcher Pilar Archila-Suerte teamed up with Hernandez and Ferenc Bunta, assistant professor in communication sciences & disorders who specializes in bilingual phonological acquisition. The research team selected Hungarian sounds the participants had never heard before, and that neither resembled Spanish nor sounded like English, to establish a level playing field for monolinguals and bilinguals.The researchers found that half the bilinguals and monolinguals could learn the sounds and half the bilinguals and monolinguals could not.  When the researchers looked at the “good perceivers” (those people who could learn the sound the first time they heard it), they discovered that they used speech areas of the brain to process sounds. And, those who were “bad receivers” did not. This suggested that “good perceivers” are better at perceiving speech, even speech they’ve never heard before.“In our study, we found people that seem to be intuitive about the sounds, independently of how many languages they speak,” Hernandez said. “That could serve as a predictor of whether someone could learn another language more easily or not. That was an eye opener for me because I feel like now we are starting to find different factors that predict the ability to learn different things. The Vista Companies Breaks Ground on Phase III of LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch

  Houston-based developer Vista Equities Group has broken ground on development of Phase III of LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch.  LaCenterra is a 34-acre, 300,000 square foot Main Street style mixed-use development located on the western edge of metropolitan Houston in Katy, TX on the Grand Parkway.Phase III will of LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch will consist of 37,000 sq. ft. of retail space, anchored by Trader Joe’s, 36,000 sq. ft. of Class A office space and a parking garage.  Hoar Construction will be overseeing the construction of the project.  “Eight years ago we began construction on the first phase of LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch, which is a wonderful project we are incredibly proud of. Texas Hunters for the Hungry Program Expands, Goes Online

In a study of men with penile artery blockage (average age 35), the smokers were significantly more blocked than non-smokers. And the more they smoked, the more their arteries were blocked. Since erections are mainly caused by blood flowing into the penis through arteries, unclogged arteries are very important in enhancing one’s sex life.Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor, meaning it tightens blood vessels and restricts blood flow. In the long term, it has even been shown to cause permanent damage to arteries. Since a man’s erection depends on blood flow, researchers assumed smoking would affect erections. Studies have confirmed this time and again. In one study published in 1986 in Addiction Behavior, it was shown that just two cigarettes could cause softer erections in male smokers. Results are corroborated by a definitive study published in June 2001 that looked at all studies done on impotent men over the last two decades. Among smokers, the chances of conceiving fall by 10 – 40 per cent per cycle. Men who smoke have a lower sperm count than non-smokers, and their semen contains a higher proportion of malformed sperm. By-products of nicotine present in semen of smokers have been found to reduce the mobility of sperm.Of course, quitting smoking would also eliminate stained teeth, unhealthy skin, rapid accumulation of wrinkles on the face, and clothing, hair, and breath that stink of smoke. Decreasing your risk of cancer and heart disease — which also do tend to have negative effects on one’s sex life — can also be sexy in the long run.Smokers may have enjoyed a sexy image in the past, but research tells us that they are not “doing it” as often as non-smokers. Studies show that men between 25 and 40 years who smoked one or more packs per day had sex less often than non-smoking men of the same age. Breast Cancer Treatment Coping with a Mastectomy

As women, especially American women, much of our femininity is centered on our breasts.  No matter where you look, there are pictures, billboards, commercials, television shows, and movies with women with these beautiful breasts and ample cleavage.  The thought of losing one or both breasts, to breast cancer, can be devastating for many of us.  Sure, there’s reconstruction, but will it ever really look the same again?  Even if you have reconstruction, you’ll never have sensation there again and, for many of us, that definitely affects our sexuality.I went through two separate mastectomies, for my breast cancer, despite the fact that I wanted them both done at the same time.  Two different surgeons told me that wasn’t necessary.  They found out, later, that it was, as I had the same breast cancer in both breasts.  Through these surgeries, I learned a few things about what to expect, and how to get up and running again, after a mastectomy for breast cancer.The first thing to realize is that, apart from the emotional aspect of such an operation, this is a simple surgery.  The breast is composed, mostly, of fatty tissue and, of course, milk ducts and lobes.  The removal of this breast tissue is way easier than operating on an organ, but carries much more emotional impact for most of us.  Most surgeons will get as much of the breast tissue out as they can to help alleviate the chance of a recurrence of your breast cancer.  You will typically wind up with a horizontal scar about four inches long.  The scar may be red for quite a while but, ultimately, should fade to where you can hardly see it anymore.You want to be sure to take loose-fitting, button-down shirts (raiding your hubby’s closet is helpful) with you, to the hospital, as you won’t be able to raise your arms over your head for a while.  You will also need a sports bra and I would highly recommend one that fastens in the front.  They will put that on you after your surgery.  Typically, you should be able to stay in the hospital for one night.  If you’re going to have lymph nodes removed, a small pillow, to slip under that arm, will help make you more comfortable.  Check with your local American Cancer Society as they may have small pillows for you.  An extra pillow to hold to your chest, if you need to cough, sneeze, or laugh, can help keep your incision from hurting.When you wake up, you will have a couple of drain tubes for each side you have done.  These tubes are important as they allow the excess fluid, which your body will produce, to drain out.  If you didn’t have them, the fluid would have to be aspirated with a needle.  The drains, even though they’re no fun, are better than that.  These drains will have to be emptied a couple of times a day and you will have to write down how much fluid you drain so the doctor will know when you’ve slowed down enough to remove them.  You may not know where to put these drains under your clothing.  I pinned mine up to the sports bra and that way, they didn’t pull when I moved.When you get home, plan on having someone there to help you for the first few days.  You won’t be allowed to reach into your cabinets and definitely won’t be able to clean house or pick up your children, if you have little ones.  You’ll be sent home with pain meds and definitely take them if you need them.  Studies show that you will heal faster if you keep yourself out of pain, so don’t be afraid to take them as prescribed.If you have a recliner, you might consider moving it into the bedroom as you won’t be able to lie flat for a while.  You’ll need to sleep in a partial sitting position.  If you don’t have one, or don’t have space for it in your bedroom, lots of pillows will work, too.  That’s what I used.  Just be sure you have enough pillows to keep yourself comfortable propped up.If you would like someone who’s been there before you to visit with, be sure to call your local American Cancer Society and ask for a Reach 2 Recovery volunteer.  This is an American Cancer Society program where they try to match you with one of their volunteers who have as similar experience as you’re facing.  This woman will come visit you and will bring you all sorts of brochures and information on conventional treatment.  She will also bring you a list of exercises you can start to do to regain your mobility and range of motion.This is VERY important.  It hurts to stretch your arm up, after surgery, but if you haven’t had reconstruction, and you don’t start soon, you will lose that range of motion.  I would recommend starting to gently, slowly reach your arm up … let your body be your guide … the day after your surgery.  This is ONLY if you have not had reconstruction.  If you have, let your plastic surgeon tell you when to start stretching.  Push to where it hurts just a little, but do not push too far past that.  Little by little, you’ll find yourself able to stretch a little farther every couple of days.Most of all, allow yourself to heal emotionally, as well as physically.  Some of us just can’t look at that incision right away.  That’s OK.  Take as much time as you need.  I know I felt like some kind of freak with no breasts and, even six years later, I still do sometimes.  But remind yourself that these scars are your battle scars.  They do not make you less of a woman.  They make you a warrior.Didnt find Burn more Calories in Less Time

When I work with my clients, one of the key elements that I incorporate into all of our workouts is INTENSITY.  In my view, intensity is the most critical aspect of any exercise regime and can mean the difference between someone who reaches their goals and someone who doesn’t.  Increasing your workout’s intensity will stimulate your body to burn more calories and induce a greater cardiovascular response.  It will also allow you to have a more time efficient workout.If you are looking to burn fat and become more toned, then increasing your exercise intensity is critical.  Many people have the misconception that if you workout at a higher intensity you will no longer be burning fat since you will be in your “cardio zone”.  Whereas, if you keep your intensity low for a longer duration you will burn more fat since you will be in your “fat burning zone”.  Let me clarify this for you once and for all.  By training at a low intensity (<70% max) it is true that you use fat as your predominant source of fuel.  While exercising at a higher intensity (>75% max) your main fuel source is carbohydrate but you will ultimately burn more calories.   And since 1 pound of fat is equivalent to 3500 calories, the ultimate goal is to burn as many calories as possible to create a negative energy balance!One of the best ways to achieve this intensity is through the use of full-body compound circuit training (strength training) in conjunction with interval training (on the cardio equipment).  The benefit of full body compound training is that since it utilizes more muscle in any given movement you burn more calories.  The intensity of the workout also means that each exercise becomes more challenging as your heart rate is sustained at a much higher level.Here are a couple of benefits to following an exercise program combining circuit training and interval training:Intervals and circuits vastly reduce boredom.  Traditional steady state cardio training and/or weight lifting can become quite boring.  Interval training and circuit training offer more variety and excitement to your workouts.Interval training increases post-exercise energy expenditure (calories burned following exercise) more than steady-state exercise, which means that more fat is burned. After intense exercise, the body needs extra calories as it works to repair muscles, replace energy stores (i.e. carbohydrate) and restore the body to its normal state (e.g. reduce heart rate). As this can take many hours, you will keep on burning more calories long after the workout is over.
